When did the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 come out?

This is the story of its rise and fall. The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 made its first flight more than 31 years ago, in January 1990. However, its story can be traced back significantly further to a previous McDonnell Douglas trijet design. We are, of course, talking about the famous DC-10.

What is the difference between a MD-11 and a DC-10?

The MD-11 on the left is 202 ft (61.6 m) long and has winglets and a smaller tailplane while the DC-10 on the right is 181.6 ft (55.35 m) long. Although the MD-11 program was launched in 1986, McDonnell Douglas had started to search for a DC-10 derivative as early as 1976.

How big is a McDonnell Douglas MD-11?

The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 is a tri-engine, long-range airliner with a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 610,000 lbs and a range of 8,460 miles designed to connect distant points across the globe. Its seating for 248 passengers made it a significant player in the international travel market at the time.
